Which union should I join? Find the union for your job
Find the union for your job, compare fees and ask for a rep. You do not need your manager's permission to join, but check what help starts when.
If your care visits run late, your warehouse shifts are cut or you’re called into a disciplinary, you need someone on your side. You should not have to argue about missing pay alone. A union can help you challenge it and organise with colleagues. You can join without your manager’s permission, even if nobody else on the shift has joined.
- £2.98
- Usdaw weekly fee for shop staff
- £18.59
- Unite full-time fee each month

- Jan 2027
- Statement duty planned, not in force
Join today, before the next shift
This guide states the law as at 1 October 2026 in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has separate law. Union fees were checked for our research on 8 October 2026 and are quoted as stated, not guaranteed rates. Confirm your band before joining.
- Find the union for your workplace and job. Ask a trusted colleague whether a union is recognised and who the rep is. Recognition means the employer agrees, or is legally required, to bargain with that union. If there is no recognised union, use the job table or the TUC union finder. You can choose another union that accepts your job, belong to more than one, or leave.
- Ask about help before you pay. Tell the membership team your job, employer, hours and whether a problem has already started. Ask: “Who is my local rep? What is my fee? When does representation start? Will you help with this dispute?” Many unions exclude pre-existing cases. Joining does not pause a tribunal deadline.
- Join using your personal contact details. Use the union’s join page and your own email, rather than a work account. You do not have to tell your manager. Membership is special-category personal data, but that is not a promise of secrecy. Your membership may become apparent if you ask a rep to deal with your employer.
- If a hearing is booked, request your companion now. Write: “Please confirm that [name], my trade union official, can accompany me at the hearing on [date].” A fellow worker or an eligible union official can attend a qualifying disciplinary or grievance hearing without union recognition. Confirm that the rep can attend before naming them.
For an existing problem, contact Acas, Citizens Advice or a law centre. If your visa is tied to your employer, get advice before confronting them. A union, law centre or the Work Rights Centre can help you assess that risk.
Why it is worth joining
You have a statutory right to a companion at a disciplinary hearing that could lead to a formal warning or other disciplinary action, and at an appeal. The grievance right covers a complaint about a duty your employer owes you. It does not cover every informal conversation or investigation meeting. Under section 10 of the Employment Relations Act 1999, your companion can be a fellow worker, an employed union official or a union official whom the union has certified in writing as experienced or trained to act as a companion. You do not need recognition. If the companion is unavailable, propose a reasonable alternative within five working days of the original hearing date. The employer must postpone to that time. A breach can attract up to two weeks’ pay, subject to the statutory weekly-pay cap. Our guide to a union rep at a disciplinary explains what to request.
Your companion can put and sum up your case, respond to points and confer with you. They have no statutory right to answer questions for you. Union legal representation depends on the union’s rules.
Where a union is recognised, it bargains on pay, hours and holidays. In 2025, collective agreements set pay for 89.6% of public-sector jobs and 19.5% of private-sector jobs, according to the Department for Business and Trade. Membership alone does not raise next month’s wage. Colleagues organising together can seek recognition and negotiate an agreement. You do not need recognition to challenge pay below the minimum wage.
You can join, leave or belong to more than one union. An employer must not refuse you a job because you are a member, because you are not, or because you will not agree to stay out. Section 137 protects that choice. An employer cannot lawfully require union membership as a condition of the job. Offering you money to leave or stay out is also unlawful, as GOV.UK explains.
Employee
- Dismissal for membership of an independent union or protected union activity is automatically unfair
- No qualifying service period for that claim
- You also have workers’ protection against detriment and the hearing companion right
Worker who is not an employee
- Protection against detriment for independent-union membership, protected activities or using union services
- A companion at qualifying disciplinary and grievance hearings
- No section 152 unfair-dismissal claim. Get advice on your status and detriment claim
For employees, dismissal principally because of independent-union membership or protected activities is automatically unfair under section 152. For workers, cutting hours, blocking promotion or making threats because of joining an independent union can be unlawful detriment under section 146. Union activities and use of union services are protected at an appropriate time, usually outside working hours or during hours your employer agrees to. These protections do not make every walkout protected industrial action. Tribunal compensation depends on the claim and the loss, not a fixed payout for holding a membership card.
Ordinary unfair dismissal generally still needs two years’ service in Great Britain. The government plans to reduce that to six months for dismissals from 1 January 2027. That change is not in force. Dismissal for a protected union reason already has no service requirement.
Recognised unions have additional time-off rights. Their officials can get reasonable paid time off for union duties and relevant training under section 168. Members can get reasonable unpaid time off for union activities, but not industrial action. Those organising rights depend on recognition. The hearing companion right has separate rules and does not.
Norway shows a different way to bargain. Union density was 52.1% in 2024 and bargaining covered 72% of employees in 2022, predominantly at sector level, according to the OECD. UK employee density was 22.4% in 2025. These are different reference years, but wider bargaining is possible.
Which union covers your job
These are starting options, not a ranking. Ask which branch covers your employer and whether it has reps in your area.
The fees below are as stated on 8 October 2026. “Ask for a quote” means we have no verified figure. Low-pay, part-time, student and introductory rates have eligibility rules.

If nobody on the rota has joined
You can be the first. Recognition is not a condition of joining or of the statutory hearing companion right. Ask the union how it would support a member at your site and how to speak to colleagues safely.
A certified-independent union can seek statutory recognition through the Central Arbitration Committee. At least 10% of the proposed bargaining unit must be members, alongside other eligibility requirements. Since 6 April 2026, the application no longer needs to show a likely majority in favour. A recognition ballot needs a simple majority of votes cast, without the old requirement for support from 40% of the whole bargaining unit. The GOV.UK recognition guidance and our recognition guide explain the process.
From 30 October 2026, certified-independent unions are scheduled to gain a wider legal route to seek workplace access, including digital access. It is not in force on our legal review date. An access agreement or Central Arbitration Committee process is not permission simply to turn up. Read union access rights.
Large union or grassroots
Usdaw, UNISON, Unite and GMB have recognition agreements at some employers in the sectors above. IWGB, UVW and ADCU organise work including outsourced cleaning and app-based driving. Ask which branch would represent you and what support it offers. A national legal team is useful, but you also need someone who answers when a hearing is booked.
The Certification Officer’s list includes IWGB, UVW, ADCU and CAIWU, as well as the RCN and BMA. None is TUC-affiliated in our research. TUC membership is affiliation to a federation, not the legal test of whether an organisation is a trade union. The RCN and BMA hold certificates of independence despite not being TUC members.
Being listed and being certified independent are different. Our research records ADCU as listed but not certified independent. Do not assume it can use statutory recognition or the scheduled access route, both of which require independence certification. Ask your chosen union to confirm its status and what protections apply. Platform workers can also read gig-worker unions.

Voice is now Community. ARC is now part of the FDA. A site still selling either as a separate union is out of date.
What it actually costs
These examples use the £12.71 hourly minimum for workers aged 21 and over, in force from 1 April 2026. They assume the same paid hours for 52 weeks. Younger workers and those eligible for the apprentice rate have a lower minimum. Ask which subscription band applies to your pay and hours.
Example: what the fee takes out of your pay
Jordan works 30 hours a week in a shop at £12.71. Gross weekly pay is £381.30. Usdaw’s £2.98 weekly fee is 0.78% of that pay, or about 14 minutes’ earnings.
Amina works 20 paid hours a week in home care at £12.71. Gross pay is £254.20 a week and £13,218.40 a year. If she qualifies for UVW’s £10.75 monthly rate, she pays £129 a year, about 10.1 hours’ earnings. UNISON bands its fee by salary, so she should get a quote for her actual earnings.
Sam picks in a warehouse for 37.5 paid hours a week at £12.71. Gross weekly pay rounds to £476.63, and annual gross pay is £24,784.50. Unite’s £18.59 full-time monthly fee is £223.08 a year, or 0.90% of annual gross pay. The monthly fee is about 88 minutes’ earnings.
At the same hourly rate, IWGB’s £10 monthly courier fee is about 47 minutes’ earnings. BFAWU’s £3.91 weekly fee is about 18 minutes’ earnings, or £203.32 over 52 weeks. These comparisons do not assume that a genuinely self-employed courier is entitled to the minimum wage.
The law gives you the hearing companion right without requiring union membership. Membership is how you seek support from that union, subject to its rules and a rep being available. A colleague is another lawful companion. Do not mistake a statutory right to accompaniment for a guarantee that a particular union will take your case.
If they treat you worse for joining
If your shifts change after you join, record what happened. Save the old and new rotas, messages, dates and the words your manager used. Keep copies on a personal account. A change in hours alone does not prove anti-union punishment, but a message linking the cut to your membership is evidence an adviser needs.
Acas confirms that the usual Great Britain tribunal limit is six months minus a day for problems arising on or after 1 October 2026. For problems before that date, the usual limit remains three months minus a day. Ask an adviser which event starts your particular claim. Notify Acas within the applicable limit for early conciliation to pause it. A grievance, appeal or union application does not pause it. Use our tribunal deadline calculator as a starting point, then read what to do if you are punished for union activity. Do not wait for the grievance outcome before protecting a claim.
Example: the date of the rota cut matters
If a warehouse manager cuts your shifts for joining on 30 September 2026, the usual three-month limit ends on 29 December 2026. If the same thing happens on 1 October 2026, the usual six-month limit ends on 31 March 2027. These are separate hypothetical cases, before any timely Acas early conciliation pauses the clock. Do not wait until those dates to seek advice.
Agency, zero-hours and self-employed
A zero-hours rota or an agency payslip is not a reason to stay out. Your actual working relationship determines whether you are a worker or employee. Workers have the hearing companion right and protection against anti-union detriment; employees also have the section 152 dismissal route. Read zero-hours rights for the separate contract questions.
Unite and GMB accept agency workers, as do UVW and IWGB’s general branch, which quotes £9 to £16 a month. Tell the union both who pays you and who controls your shifts. Ask an adviser who is legally responsible before naming an agency or hirer in a claim.
You can join even if an app calls you self-employed. Community, Prospect, Equity, the Musicians’ Union, the NUJ and the Writers’ Guild accept self-employed members; IWGB and ADCU organise gig work. A contract label is not the final legal answer. In Uber BV v Aslam [2021] UKSC 5, the Supreme Court held that the drivers in the case were workers. That does not decide every courier’s status.
Genuinely self-employed members do not get sections 146 and 152 protection simply by joining, and cannot assume an employer-based statutory recognition route applies. A union can still advise and organise with them. If the self-employed label looks wrong, ask about status and case cover before paying. Our gig-worker unions guide explains the limits.
What changes on 30 October 2026, and in January 2027
The government timeline, updated 25 September 2026, separates measures already introduced from future plans. A date on the roadmap is not the same as a commenced right.
- Stronger protection for protected industrial action
In force. Most of the Trade Union Act 2016 was repealed. Dismissal protection for protected industrial action no longer has the old 12-week limit. This does not protect every walkout. See the transition guidance.
- Simpler statutory recognition
In force. The likely-majority test at application and the 40% support threshold in a recognition ballot were removed. A ballot needs a simple majority of votes cast. The 10% membership requirement at application remains.
- Electronic and workplace strike ballots
In force for statutory industrial-action ballots. Recognition and derecognition e-ballots are separate future measures.
- Workplace access and facilities for reps
Scheduled under Commencement No. 6, regulation 3. Certified-independent unions gain a route to seek workplace access, including digital access. New facilities provisions cover recognised unions’ officials, learning representatives and equality representatives. Not in force on 1 October 2026. Read how access will work.
- A written statement about joining a union
Planned, not commenced. Section 58 creates a duty to inform workers of their right to join, linked to written employment particulars. The roadmap gives January 2027, not a confirmed start day.
- Recognition e-ballots and wider blacklisting rules
Planned, without a confirmed date. Neither is an existing right on our review date.
The roadmap also lists protection against detriment for taking industrial action under 30 October 2026. Regulation 3 of SI 2026/1065 does not commence that provision. We cannot confirm its start from that order. Do not rely on it as an existing protection.
When the statement duty starts, a breach will not create a standalone entitlement to a payout. The section 38 mechanism can add two or four weeks’ pay, subject to the statutory weekly-pay cap, when a worker succeeds in a qualifying tribunal claim and the conditions are met. That future remedy is not available for this duty on our review date.
Northern Ireland
The Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1992 and the Employment Rights Act 2025 union measures discussed here apply in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate legislation and its own union membership protections. The Labour Relations Agency, not Acas, handles conciliation. Ask it or a Northern Ireland adviser about your claim and deadline rather than applying the Great Britain figures above.
UNISON, Unite, GMB, Usdaw, the CWU, NASUWT and the NEU operate in Northern Ireland. NIPSA covers civil and public service and is not TUC-affiliated. The scheduled 30 October access right and January 2027 duty to inform do not extend there. Ordinary unfair dismissal generally needs one year’s service in Northern Ireland. The planned Great Britain reduction to six months is not Northern Ireland law.
Questions people ask
Which union should I join if I work in care?
Compare UNISON, GMB, Community and UVW, starting with any recognised workplace union. Ask which branch covers your employer, what your salary or hours band costs, and whether existing disputes are excluded.
Is there a union for warehouse and shop workers?
Shop workers can try Usdaw, GMB or Unite. Warehouse workers can try Unite, GMB or Usdaw; road transport workers can also try URTU. The table above links directly to joining pages.
How much does it cost to join a union?
Fees vary by union, pay and hours. Usdaw quotes £2.98 a week; Unite’s full-time rate is £18.59 a month. Check your band and any waiting period before paying.
Can my employer sack me for joining, or find out that I have?
Dismissal of an employee principally for independent-union membership is automatically unfair. Workers also have detriment protection. Membership is not necessarily secret, particularly when a rep contacts your employer. Seek urgent advice if punished; some dismissal claims have a seven-day interim-relief deadline.
Can I join on a zero-hours, agency or self-employed contract?
Yes, if the union accepts your work. Your actual working relationship decides your legal status. Genuinely self-employed members can organise and get advice, but membership alone does not create employee or worker protections.
What changes on 30 October 2026?
Certified-independent unions are scheduled to gain a wider workplace access route, including digital access. New facilities provisions for reps also start. Neither is in force on 1 October 2026. The written statement duty is planned for January 2027. These measures do not extend to Northern Ireland.
